Tempe railway station is situated on the Illawarra Line of the CityRail system. It is located in the Sydney suburb of Tempe. The station is located between Sydenham railway station and the Wolli Creek Junction. It opened in 1884 with the construction of the Illawarra railway line to Hurstville[1]. The station now consists of two side platforms and an island platform connected by an overbridge at the northern end, which previously facilitated interchange between the East Hills and Illawarra lines. When opened in 1884, the station had two side platforms, current faces 1 and 2. When the line was quadruplicated in 1919, an additional platform, now numbered 4, was constructed on the eastern side and the Down platform converted to an island. Platforms 1, 2 and 3 retain their original station buildings.[2] There is no lift access to the platforms.

Platforms and services

The station is usually serviced by local (all-stations) Illawarra line trains utilising platforms 3 and 4. Platforms 1 and 2 do not see regular timetabled service.

Prior the opening of the Airport line in 2000, Tempe was the junction between the East Hills Line and the Illawarra Line, and local East Hills services stopped at the station utilising platforms 1 and 2. Most of the East Hills line services now run via the Airport and those running via Sydenham do not stop at Tempe.

The station is served by two trains per hour each way, with additional trains during weekday peak hours. The Airport and East Hills line passes platform 1 and 2. Services are listed on the box:
